New Star Wars Movie Release Dates Announced

Star Wars, Rey

The final installment in the Skywalker Saga has not yet been released, but the future of the galaxy far, far away on the big screen has been revealed. Amid a plethora of other release announcements (including a September 20, 2019 release for Ad Astra), Variety has announced the release dates for the next three Star Wars films, the first of which will be released in December 16, 2022, with two others to follow every other year in December of 2024 and 2026. After getting a Star Wars movie every year for the last several years, I’m happy there’s going to be a break. Heck, I’ve been banging the drum for a four-year break amongst friends.

Star Wars has always been an event. I remember the news reports throughout the prequels about how special these releases were, with many questioning Lucas about his galactic saga, which only got the fanbase more excited. Even perennial Conan O’Brien sidekick Triumph the Insult Comic Dog got in on the fun. Yes, he was roasting everyone, but there was no denying the joy on display, and it really harkened back to a time when fans didn’t take themselves so seriously. (For further evidence of this, look to the Robot Chicken Star Wars special that would never be allowed under Disney’s purview.) With any luck, the joy of attending a Star Wars movie – its event status arguably restored – will return, especially since this kind of break seemed to work for Aquaman (albeit a shorter wait) after the release of Justice League. Unfortunately, this joyous news for the Star Wars fandom might be bad news for the King of Atlantis’s next adventure, which is scheduled for the same day. I can’t help but wonder when that movie will be moved to make way for the next era of Star Wars films. Here’s hoping these studios stagger these release dates a bit better so that fans will be able to enjoy both.
