Mark Hamill, The Mandalorian

Mark Hamill Made a Cameo in The Mandalorian

Everyone’s favorite Jedi returned to a galaxy far, far away, but not in the way you expect. On a recent episode of the docuseries Star Wars Galley: The Mandalorian, Jon Favreau talked about Mark Hamill’s uncredited voice cameo on episode 5 of The Mandalorian, where he poetically played bartender droid EV-9D9 at the Mos Eisley Cantina from A New Hope. This brings things full circle, given that droids had previously been unwelcome.

This is the kind of news that makes me smile. As much as I love Mark Hamill as Luke, ever since I found out that he played the Joker on Batman: The Animated Series, I’ve always hoped he would add his voice to an animated version of Star Wars somewhere down the line. I was thrilled that he played the part of Darth Bane in his canon debut in the season 6 finale of The Clone Wars, as it just made everything feel more special. He then reprised his role for an animated short that filled in some of the blanks of Luke’s training in The Empire Strikes Back. Having him play a voice role on the very first live-action Star Wars series, and in an iconic locale from the first film, is awesome and makes me wonder whether Lucasfilm might include the icon in a myriad of projects. They could almost turn him into the Stan Lee of the Star Wars universe. Regardless, I’m glad Mark Hamill keeps getting called back, and I can’t wait to see what role he might play next.

Are you happy that Mark Hamill did this voice cameo? Do you think that he should be included in small roles like this going forward, or is this nothing more than a fun one-off? Let us know in the comments and stay safe and healthy as Geeks + Gamers continues to bring you more movie and TV news from a galaxy far, far away.

  1. I was 18 in 1977 when Star Wars hit the theaters.. and it was an awe inspiring thing for me.. always a sci fi fan.. to see a real action adventure like that just was incredible for me.. and I loved Luke’s character.. his beginning his life’s journey just as I was starting my own. He stood against the empire.. and I saw the second film The Empire Strikes back in a theater just off base as I did my tiny part in the cold war..

I’m glad he’s getting some credit here.. Luke didn’t deserve what Disney did to him.. that was a travesty.. He always embodied hope, the power of redemption.. on never giving up on your friends, family.. and they trashed it all.. So Good for him to get some small respect here.. even if they owe him a whole lot more.

  2. Star Wars run too deep for Mark, no matter what. I think he did a great Harrison Ford in a Bad Lip Reading parody video on YouTube. I would like to see him do more, as I’m certain he sees it as I bit of fun

  3. I’d like to see an animated series that shows Luke helping to build the New Republic. If the rumors are true and the current Disney trilogy gets the “alternate timeline” reset, then we’d be able to see Luke in his prime and Mark could voice him in those respects. He has voiced Luke for Robot Chicken a few times.
