New Terminator: Dark Fate Trailer Will Not Stop, Ever

The machines rise again as Paramount Pictures has released a new Terminator: Dark Fate trailer. The latest in the sci-fi/action series that began in 1984, Terminator: Dark Fate features Linda Hamilton’s return as Sarah Connor, a role she hasn’t played since the last one of these that had any right to exist, Terminator 2: Judgment Day. Joining her are Mackenzie Davis, Natalia Reyes, and Gabriel Luna, with Arnold Schwarzenegger once again playing the Terminator. Deadpool’s Tim Miller is directing this time, with James Cameron producing. The film opens on November 1, 2019. Check out the Terminator: Dark Fate trailer below:

Whatever sliver of hope anyone might have had for this sequel is probably gone now. The Terminator: Dark Fate trailer gives the impression (and I imagine it’s pretty accurate; why in God’s name would anyone pretend their movie is this cringe-inducing?) that we’re in for a wokefest come November. Sarah Connor, once an outstanding and multi-faceted character, is now the prototype of the modern movie heroine: arrogant, selfish, bearing a massive chip on her shoulder, and out to prove something to the patriarchy. When she smugly says, “I changed the future, saved three billion lives,” I have Captain Marvel flashbacks. Really? It was Sarah and Sarah alone? The Terminator, her son, and Miles Dyson – who gave his life to help prevent Judgment Day – had nothing to do with it? And now she’s bragging about it like she just bowled a turkey? On top of that, she’s seemingly on a mission to minimize the Terminator’s presence, telling him she’s going to kill him and stealing his catchphrase (one of the most iconic in film history). Her anti-Terminator vendetta might be explained by some spoilers floating around, but either way, it undercuts all the character development she went through in those amazing two movies, from seeing the Terminator as the face of death itself to considering him a friend and the best father her son ever had. All of that is undone, though, because there’s gold in them thar hills (and I think they may be in for a rude awakening on that score). Meanwhile in the Terminator: Dark Fate trailer, John Connor has apparently been replaced by Natalia Reyes’ character as the savior of mankind, because history just kind of rights itself when interfered with, so the main theme of the first two movies – “There’s no fate but what we make for ourselves” – means nothing, and everything the characters went through was pointless. (If taken to its logical conclusion, that means the machines can’t win either; gotta love a movie with stakes, huh?) Mackenzie Davis, the new kinda-sorta-Terminator, looks about as interesting as stale bread, and Gabriel Luna’s villain is devoid of menace, not seeming for a second like he’s even a match for Davis, let alone Arnold or Hamilton. There’s also an implied message about illegal immigration because the feminist angle wasn’t enough for the current year. But fear not, because James Cameron is… producing?
